Book Review: A Clan of Two (Star Wars: The
Mandalorian)
The
Mandalorian series on Disney+ has been a favorite of families of all kinds
since it first aired. The gruff Mando with his deeply felt sense of duty and
honor contrasts starkly with the innocence and apparent kindness of The Child,
and, despite his other obligations, Mando forms a strong attachment with the little
creature in its floating capsule/pram.
In
this fast-paced storybook, author Brooke Vitale tells the story of how this
unlikely pair met, her words bringing us along for the ride. We not only get to know Mando, but also the cast of characters he meets along his way, both the ones out to
get him and The Child, and the ones who help him on his missions. Tomatofarm’s
illustrations bring them to life, from the wise, resourceful Ugnaught, Kuiil,
to the ex-rebel Shock Trooper, Cara Dune, who becomes a friend and ally to
Mando. Their adventures take them all over the universe, as Mando tries to both
collect bounties and protect The Child. At the very end, we encounter the evil Moff
Gideon, a Former Imperial leader, who wants The Child for his own nefarious purposes, and
Mando vows to keep The Child safe.
Kids
will enjoy reliving the events from the show and will also learn about
cooperation and friendship. As the title implies, Mando and The Child form a
family unit; as kids know, families come in all shapes and sizes, and though
this “Clan of Two” make an unusual family, the bond between them is strong. Mando’s
determination to protect and do what is right for The Child is exactly the
feeling of responsibility that human parents and caretakers feel for the
children they watch over.
This
book is fun for reading together or for kids to read on their own. It is a
page-turner, whether or not you’ve seen the Disney+ series. Any Star Wars fan
will enjoy reading it and sharing it with others.
