Movie and Show Tie-Ins

06/16/2023

Summer is here! School is out and now comes the fun. Soon to be followed by, “I’m bored. What can I do now?” Well, read of course. It may be a little easier to convince kids this summer when many exciting stories are coming to the big screen and small screen.

The Little Mermaid has had huge success in its first weeks of premiering. A perfect follow-up to continue the magic are the books Little Mermaid Adventures on LandThis is Ariel, and even 5-Minute Stories The Little Mermaid featuring the animated Ariel.

Elemental is due to hit the big screen on June 16th. Let’s get ready with the book Elementals Better Together. Know all of the characters before the movie and even revisit the book after the movie. We know kids can watch the same movie hundreds of times and still be entranced.

The Snoopy Show is on Apple TV, but even if you don’t have a subscription, you can enjoy the lovable Peanuts Gang in Happiness is a Dancing DogTo Mom and Dad with Love, and Peanuts Graphic Novels.

And for family viewing The Magician’s Elephant is on Netflix. Again, no subscription just read the amazing book as a family. The School Library Journal calls this a “must-read aloud.” With so many different characters and voices, it will be a fun experience for the whole family.

Let’s not forget Alma’s Way on PBS. Alma Speaks Up and The Friendship Club, are bilingual books that are sure to be a hit for reading together and on your own. These books focus on critical thinking, finding your voice, and problem-solving. Good lessons any time of year.

Reading together as a family strengthens connections, improves listening skills, helps build fluency and language skills, teaches that reading is important, and provides an opportunity to imagine different worlds. And dare I say it? Reading helps prevent summer slide.
