What Kids are Reading!
When my son was in 3rd- 4th grade and
his class was sent to the library to choose a book to read, he would check-out
or renew My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett. He would check this
book out again and again because he loved the story. If he had to spend time
reading, he wanted it to be something he could immerse himself in and enjoy.
As an adult, I saw the book frequently at my house, knew he
really liked it, but never bought a copy for home. I didn’t want to insert myself
into his routine. I didn’t want to take the magic away from him discovering
this wonderful book that was his alone. He did read other books as well, but
this book fit just right in his backpack.
This memory always has me wondering, what books continue to
stand the test of time? What books speak to children again and again? To find
answers I went to the website, Accelerated Reader. They have an article titled, “What Kids are Reading
2023”, that looks at books that have a strong following
year after year across the country (click the title above to be linked to the
article).
