Learn About Pets

Pet adoptions and purchases are year-round events. It’s exciting to bring home a new dog or cat, but then reality hits. Children who have spent time begging for a pet now need to learn how to take care of their new best friend. And how to understand their new friend’s needs.

Penworthy has two new books this month that are just right for young pet owners. A First Guide to Cats and A First Guide to Dogs.

A First Guide to Cats, told from a cat’s point of view, helps kids learn about what cats like and dislike. What’s special about a cat, like why do their eyes glow and how can they see in the dark? What do those sounds mean that a cat makes? The book also discusses how to introduce cats to a new home, new toys, cat doors, and more. It even describes a homemade cat toy made from an empty soda bottle that can give cats hours of fun. Content is age appropriate and does not include illness or reproductive issues (Reading level: Grades 3-7).

A First Guide to Dogs, told from a dog’s point of view, gives young pet owners a view into their dog’s life. Learn that a dog’s nose has more than 800 olfactory detectors, which tells them everything from how to find their humans in the house to finding treats and other animals. How do dogs communicate? How can you take the best care of your best friend? Content is age appropriate (Reading level: Grades 3-7).

In addition, you may want to update your pet collection with the series All About Dogs and My Cat from AV2. Both series have six titles on some of the most popular dog and cat breeds. Both series will let younger readers learn how to take care of their pet by breed (Reading level: Grades PK-2).
