One Cool Duck Series
What's cool, anyway? Skateboards, pizza, arcade games,
and being kind. This buoyant young graphic chapter book introduces Duck and
pals, kicking off a series that makes real-life friendship issues fun.
Duck is cool. He can flip a skateboard, and he’s a good
friend. In the first book, “King Cool”, Duck feels content with his
summer plans. He and his friends have a super rad summer planned filled with
skateboarding, swimming, and hanging together. When a new kid, Cat, goes
zipping by on his skateboard, they are all impressed by his super coolness.
Duck invites Cat to hang with them, but he soon gets tired of Cat’s
inconsideration and rudeness. At the woodland pool, Cat climbs the swing rope
so high that he gets scared and ends up stuck. Duck is able to rescue Cat. All
ends well, and Cat apologizes for his behavior.
In the second book, “The Far-Out Fort”, the gang builds
a fort where everyone can hang and be together. The gang works hard in
constructing a tree fort. Except for Cat, he says that forts aren’t cool. This
ruffles Ducks and everyone’s feathers. Duck and his friends once again teach
Cat that being mean isn’t cool. In the end Cat brings some finishing touches to
make the far-out fort.
This series is unique in that it features slang from
the 50’s and “other cool eras”. Such expressions as “crum-bum” and “dope as a
cantaloupe” are just a couple examples. While kids may not understand these
dated expressions, they will find them funny. And if they are struggling, call
Grandma or Grandpa. It would be a great book to read together.
The theme is always kindness, teamwork, and respecting
others feelings. This is a positive, cool book on friendship.
