Just Harriet written by Elana K. Arnold
Harriet is a third grader whose life is about to change, and
she does not like change. Harriet’s mom is pregnant and confined to bed rest
for the last two months of her pregnancy. Harriet’s dad takes her to Nana’s
house to stay until the baby comes.
Harriet loves visiting her Nana with her parents for a few
days or even a week, but for two months and just herself. She is not happy. Harriet
was promised that the new baby would not change life at all.
But change does happen, and we are there to feel all the
feelings with Harriet. Anger when her dad leaves Nana’s, missing him
immediately, love for Nana and her dog Moneypenny, and also curiosity to
explore the old shed with its hidden treasure.
Nana does not have an ordinary house; she runs a colorful Bed
& Breakfast on an island full of tourists. Exploring Nana’s is an
adventure, especially when Harriet finds an old key. The mystery is on to find
what the key fits.
Harriet lies. She’s not always sure why she lies, but she
does. She also has night terrors, which occasionally cause her to wet the bed.
While Harriet is learning to understand her behavior and the adults around her,
we feel for her. Young readers will understand her confusion, anger,
embarrassment, sense of adventure and love for her cat, Matzo Ball, and her
family. It’s a confusing time for Harriet, and the readers will be able to relate
to her.
We see change in Harriet, with emotional growth occurring in
just the short span of 2 weeks. This story is reminiscent of Ramona Quimby,
Henry and Beezus, lovable characters that may not always be perfect, but you
love them right away. This is the first title in the Just Harriet series.
