Book Review: The Guardian of the Dragon Gem (Raya and the Last Dragon)

Raya and the Last Dragon is a charming, animated film about the power of trust and working together to make the world a better place. It teaches an important lesson: selfishness and greed can destroy, while cooperation and generosity benefit everyone.

The Guardian of the Dragon Gem depicts the opening scenes in the movie, in which Raya, a fierce warrior-in-training in the Land of Heart, is proving herself worthy of protecting the powerful and priceless Dragon Gem, a task that has fallen to her family for generations. Sneaking into the temple at night, she and her trusty steed, Tuk Tuk, make their way into the final chamber where the gem is kept. Raya encounters a masked warrior, who defeats her in combat. When the warrior removes his mask, he is revealed to be Raya’s father, Chief Benja. By fighting her way to the inner circle of the Dragon Gem chamber, Raya earns her place among the generations of her family who have guarded the gem for 500 years.  Chief Benja formally makes her a Guardian of the Dragon Gem.

Anyone who enjoyed the movie will enjoy this retelling of the origin of Raya’s quest. This portion of the story focuses on family ties and pride in accomplishment. While the movie goes on to describe how the five tribes of Kumandra quarrel and fight over the Dragon Gem, this book tells a happy story of a daughter making her father proud. Kids who may be frightened by the fighting and danger that comes later in the movie will find very little to fear in this Penworthy Prebound 8 x 8 book.  As part of our Prebound collection, this book is guaranteed to circulate and endure, and if you are not completely satisfied with its quality at any time, we will replace it.
