Big Kid Bed

Book Review: “Big Kid Bed” by Leslie Patricelli

There are many milestones that come along as babies become toddlers and toddlers become kids. One of the first is often moving from a crib to a big kid bed, which is the event chronicled in this little story from Candlewick Press’s Patricelli’s Baby series. Our Penworthy Prebound version is in an 8x8 format, making it easy for reading to kids individually or in a group.

Using colorful illustrations and easy to understand language, readers hear directly from the baby moving into their big kid bed. As with most changes in kids’ lives, Baby is at first excited for this new experience, but upon getting into their new big kid bed, Baby is concerned about how big it is and how small they are, and the possibility of falling out. Mommy and Daddy reassure Baby and leave, turning out the light. That’s where the fun begins.

As any parent can relate, moving a child from a crib to a big kid bed can be stressful, as it suddenly becomes easy for the child to get out of bed and explore the house while everyone is sleeping.  This story addresses that, but although Baby explores a bit, they soon find they are tired and ready to snuggle into their new bed, accompanied by stuffed animals, their cat and their dog.

This book is a great read for caregivers preparing toddlers for the move to a big kid bed, and for addressing the concerns that come with that move. It is bound to be in demand in your library. Find it on our website here.
