National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day August 4

08/04/2021

What a sweet day indeed! Today we celebrate the perfect morsels of deliciousness created by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1937. What a happy accident! She had run out of baker's chocolate and only had semi-sweet chocolate on hand, so she put in the bits of semi-sweet chocolate instead, and the Tollhouse Cookie was born!

Why the Tollhouse Cookie? Well, Mrs. Wakefield and her husband ran a popular restaurant in eastern Massachusetts called the Tollhouse Inn. In 1939, two years after the fortuitous invention, Mrs. Wakefield sold her recipe to Nestle, and it's pretty much the same one you will find today on a bag of Nestle chocolate chips.

Whether you like yours with or without nuts, add butterscotch chips, or even cocoa to the batter, you have to agree, this was a great "accident"! Thank you, Mrs. Wakefield, for the delicious cookies!

To celebrate National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, we suggest making a batch of cookies, pouring some milk and finding a cozy spot to read a great book. If you share the cookies or not is completely up to you!
