Book Series Review: Abdo Kids Everyday Sign Language
According to Educational Playcare, LTD.:
The use of sign language has
proven to be beneficial for children in a wide variety of settings. Teaching
sign language to preverbal babies has proven to benefit children in their later
years. Research shows that sign language speeds up speech development,
reduces frustration in young children by giving them a means to express
themselves before they know how to talk, increases parent-child bonding, and
lets babies communicate vital information, such as if they are hurt or hungry. (Educational
Playcare, LTD, 2016)
This wonderful series from Abdo offers easy-to-follow,
bite-sized lessons in ASL, American Sign Language, to use in multiple
situations, including at school, with family, when eating, and more. One book, “Sign
Language & The Alphabet”, shows the entire alphabet, and is a good starting
point. Every book offers colorful
photographs related to the word or words being taught, and they are written for
beginning readers or as great read-aloud material.
The end of each book shows the ASL alphabet, a glossary, and
an index. The photographs and drawings include diverse children, allowing any
child to see themselves in the book. The
series would be perfect for caregivers teaching babies sign language as well as
toddlers and pre-K to help them express themselves in different ways. They also
teach inclusivity; learning ASL will help kids interact with deaf friends and
classmates.
