Book Review: David Goes to School by David Shannon

David has trouble paying attention, following directions, sitting still, and waiting his turn. It seems like his teacher is always telling David “No.” His antics eventually land him the consequence of staying after school and cleaning the classroom desks. David finally does a good job and is told, “Yes, David, you can go home now.”

This enchanting and funny picture book is illustrated somewhat as though a kid drew the pictures, and the words are written on “learning to write-style” paper that appears to be stuck onto the pages. This adds to the charm, as the reader feels as they are inside David’s brain as he hears the constant corrections and redirections his behavior gets him. Any child who feels like David will really bond with this book.

The author has a preface that talks about himself as a child; the David in the book is really him. Parents and caregivers will enjoy knowing that their own little “Davids” can get great feedback from a job well done and that it is perfectly normal for some kids to behave this way. Beginning readers will get a laugh out of reading this themselves, and it will also provide a fun and thoughtful read-aloud experience.
