Book Review: Henry Hecklebeck Spells Trouble

Henry Hecklebeck is a bit unsettled to discover his class will be participating in the Brewster Spelling Bee.  He is not a confident speller, so it’s hard for Henry to be enthusiastic about the bee. His fears only get worse after a bad dream in which a giant bee with Principal Pennypacker’s face gives him a nonsense word to spell and an oversized cat tries to get Henry’s tongue. After practicing spelling with his sister, and spelling all the words right, Henry realizes what the real problem is—stage fright. Henry is scared he will burp, or stutter, or otherwise embarrass himself onstage during the spelling bee. Although Heidi tries to reassure him, Henry is still nervous.

That night, Henry has a hard time falling asleep. What if he has another bad dream and another giant cat tries to get his tongue? Tossing and turning, Henry tries to keep his mind off the spelling bee and his bad dream. But then he sees a glowing ball of light coming from his bookshelf . . .

Author Wanda Coven and illustrator Priscilla Burris created this delightful series about a boy navigating childhood and all that it entails—with the help of a Book of Spells. The series is a spin-off from their book series about Henry’s sister. Heidi. Part amateur spy, part regular kid, with a sprinkle of magic, Henry is sure to become a favorite character in your library.  Add this book to your collection here, and see the rest of the series in our catalog here
