Stan Berenstain

Today, September 29, is the birthday of Stan Berenstain, half of the married team of Stan & Jan Berenstain, creators of the Berenstain Bears. Inspired by the universal difficulties of parenting, they started writing humorous stories about their experiences, using bears as characters, not because of their last name, but because they found bears easy to draw.

With support from Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss), who became their editor at Random House, the Berenstains wrote over 300 books that were published in 23 languages. Their characters were adapted for the stage, screen, and toys, and are a mainstay for many schools, libraries, and families, as the interactions the stories portray are relatable to almost anyone.

The Berenstains met on their first day of art school at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art in 1941 and were married for 59 years until Stan’s death in 2005. They had two sons, Mike and Leo.  Mike is a writer and illustrator himself; he helped his parents with the Berenstain Bears book series, as well as other new projects of his mother's.
