Today I Will Fly! by Mo Willems
Elephant & Piggie is among Mo Willems best-known series,
and this fun picture book is one of his best. Piggie has decided that she WILL
fly, and Gerald, pragmatic as ever, tells her she will not. She will not fly
today, tomorrow, or next week. According
to Gerald, Piggie will never fly. Piggie, however, believes otherwise and goes in search of help.
First, Piggie thinks she has flown when a loud dog chases her,
and she finds herself on top of Gerald’s head. Clearly, she has flown! But Gerald is forced to burst her bubble and tell her she merely jumped up there; she did not fly. Nevertheless, Piggie is not deterred. She continues her quest to fly.
The next time Gerald sees Piggie, she is flying! Gerald is
so happy! He says, “My friend can fly! She can fly!” Piggie tells him, “I am
not flying, I am getting help.” Sure enough, she is being held up by a rope
around her middle and a duck is helping her fly. Of course, now Gerald wants to
fly as well, though finding him able helpers may be more difficult.
As with all Mo Willems Elephant & Piggie stories, this
book has simple illustrations and uses very basic language. Given the common
phrase “when pigs fly”, this book will bring a smile to the face of all who
read it. Piggie’s determination and belief
in herself are just as strong in Today I Will Fly as they are in all the books
in the series, as is Gerald’s pessimism and doubt. This is one of the many
things children love about these books—the characters stay true to their
personalities and thus are predictable, something kids like in book
series. Young readers will also be quick to
notice how polite Piggie is, giving thanks to each of her helpers, including
the dog that scared her so much she jumped to the top of Gerald’s head.
